Age and Citizenship

First things first. The National Guard welcomes individuals between the ages of 17 and 35. If you are under 18, you will need parental consent and that’s all.

A person needs to have one of the following: a U.S. Birth Certificate, a Naturalization Certificate, or an 8-year Permanent Resident Card (I551 Card). Undocumented individuals or those with a 4-year permanent resident card are not eligible to join at this time, and cannot receive a waiver.

Education and Testing

While a high school diploma or GED is preferred, it is not a hard requirement for all paths. However, you will need to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test regardless of your education. This test gauges your skills and knowledge in various areas, helping both you and your recruiter determine the perfect Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) for you. Physical Fitness

The National Guard demands physical commitment. You will need to meet certain body composition standards, including Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference, and pass a physical fitness test. These requirements slightly vary depending on your chosen Military Occupational Specialty (MOS).

Additional Considerations

Prior military experience can be helpful, but not required. Some specialized Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) may need additional qualifications. So, discuss this with your recruiter.
